Pregnancy & Birth

Supported through pregnancy, birth, and the weeks that follow.

Our certified nurse-midwives provide personalized prenatal care and bedside support for hospital birth, working collaboratively with our OB/GYN and the StoneSprings Hospital Center team.

When to call during pregnancy.

For urgent pregnancy-related concerns, call our on-call provider at 703-957-1245.

Please call if you:

  • Believe you are in labor
  • Think your water has broken
  • Experience vaginal bleeding
  • Notice decreased fetal movement
  • Have another urgent pregnancy concern

If you believe you are in labor or your water has broken, contact the on-call provider before going to the hospital so the Labor & Delivery team can prepare for your arrival.

Going to StoneSprings Labor & Delivery

Labor & Delivery is located on the second floor of StoneSprings Hospital Center.

The hospital’s main entrance is open weekdays from 6:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. When the main entrance is closed, enter through the Emergency Department.

Pregnancy care is more than a schedule of appointments.

Prenatal care gives you and your care team regular opportunities to monitor your health and your baby’s development, discuss recommended testing, prepare for birth, and address questions as they arise. Your visit schedule and care plan may change based on your health history, pregnancy, and individual needs.

Midwifery-led care places special emphasis on education, relationship-building, and shared decision-making. We want you to understand what is happening throughout your pregnancy and feel comfortable bringing your priorities, concerns, and preferences into the conversation.

Your care journey.

Your First Prenatal Visits

Early visits typically include a review of your medical, family, and pregnancy history; medications and supplements; questions or symptoms; and plans for appropriate exams, laboratory work, screening, and ultrasound. Bring a current medication list and any records your care team requests.

Ongoing Prenatal Care

As pregnancy progresses, visits help monitor maternal and fetal well-being, review test results, discuss physical and emotional changes, and prepare for labor, feeding, recovery, and early parenthood. Additional visits or consultation may be recommended when a concern or complication requires closer attention.

Labor And Hospital Birth

Center for Midwifery & Women’s Health attends births at StoneSprings Hospital Center. Our certified nurse-midwives provide bedside support throughout labor and birth, working collaboratively with our physicians and the hospital care team.

We support individualized birth plans, including medicated and unmedicated labor, low-intervention approaches when appropriate, and cesarean birth when needed. Patients may also choose to have a private doula as part of their support team. StoneSprings offers tubs for hydrotherapy and aromatherapy as additional comfort measures during labor.

Postpartum Recovery And Follow-Up

Care continues after birth. Postpartum visits are an opportunity to check physical healing, emotional well-being, infant-feeding questions, sleep and support, contraception, and any pregnancy or birth complications that may affect future health.

Lactation support is also available through StoneSprings seven days a week, including bedside consultation after delivery, prenatal breastfeeding education, and telephone follow-up.

A collaborative approach to hospital birth.

Pregnancy and labor can be unpredictable. A collaborative model allows midwives to support physiologic birth and individualized preferences while involving an OB/GYN or other hospital specialists when circumstances call for additional medical or surgical care.

  • Ongoing education and preparation throughout pregnancy
  • Support for informed decisions and personal birth preferences
  • Bedside care from certified nurse-midwives
  • Medicated and unmedicated birth options
  • Low-intervention support when appropriate
  • Access to physician and hospital resources when needed
  • Support for planned or unplanned cesarean birth when necessary
