Karen is a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Nurse Midwife with more than 30 years of experience of caring for women and their families. She is very excited to be a founding member of the Center for Midwifery and Women’s Health!

After receiving her Master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, Karen worked in an outpatient setting providing prenatal care and GYN care to women in Northern Virginia.  After several years, she pursued her dream to become a Nurse Midwife, earning her Certificate of Midwifery from the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing, in Hyden, KY.

Since then, Karen has delivered more than 2000 babies in Northern Virginia and West Virginia.  Her passion (and joy) is to help women have the birth they desire and witnessing the power of women as they grow their families.  She also continues to provide Woman centered GYN care to meet her patient’s personal needs.

Karen is a proud mom of 3 grown young men and 2 fur babies and enjoys family time and beach getaways!

Margie Brandquist is a Certified Nurse-Midwife, graduating from UCLA graduate school with her CNM and MSN degrees in 1997.  She moved back east with her family in 1999 and has been living in Leesburg ever since. She was fortunate to help start Loudoun Community Midwives in 2003 and served the women of Northern Virginia in that role until 2017 when it was acquired by a large healthcare entity.  It has been a challenge to practice the type of Midwifery we feel so strongly about and that women deserve. We have been blessed to have put together a team of Midwives and staff that you know and love.  In our journey to start “Center for Midwifery and Women’s Health” we were fortunate to work with an amazing OB/GYN whose belief system was parallel to ours and who had lots of experience in collaborative care.  Dr. Deb Bowers was a key player in setting up our new practice. We all feel blessed with the addition of Dr. Bowers to CFM.  This allows us to practice seamless Midwifery care with the added expertise of an in-house OB/GYN.   Our team is unlike any in the Northern Virginia area.  Bedside Midwifery in a collaborative model. To complete the perfect experience for our patients we deliver at Stone Springs hospital in Dulles, VA. This facility takes your birth experience to the next level. Their nurses are well versed in natural childbirth as well as honoring the wishes of all women who desire to individualize their birth journey.  Midwifery is supported by the nurses, hospital administration, and the many ancillary departments as well.

Her focus is on helping women age with grace, beauty, and all the energy needed to enjoy life.  She has started the CFM Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) section of the practice.  This is a focus on bioidentical hormone optimization.  She feels so honored to have served the women and families of this community for more than 24 years and looks forward to the exciting journey ahead for CFM and CAM.

Margie is lucky to be married to her husband Geoff for 38 years.  He has supported her Midwifery dream since the beginning.  She has 3 grown sons and is a very proud grandmother (“GEE”) to 4 amazing grandchildren with another expected in Oct 2021.   When she’s not working, she enjoys crafting and playing with her adorable grandkids.

Deborah Bowers, MD

Dr. Deborah Bowers is a Board Certified OB/GYN with more than 25 years of experience caring for women in Northern Virginia.  Originally from Vermont, Dr. Bowers graduated from Georgetown University in 1985.  She worked as an ICU nurse for ten years before returning to the classroom to obtain her medical degree. As a fourth year medical student, Dr. Bowers had a life-changing experience delivering babies in rural Alaska. In 1994, she graduated from The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont and went on to complete a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.

Dr. Bowers has worked in both private practice and academic medicine with multiple publications and presentations at national conferences. She has a special interest in normal labor, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes  and collaborative practice.  Her children were delivered by midwives. As cesarean delivery became more common, Dr. Bowers developed a “family friendly” cesarean to provide women and their partners with the opportunity to have more access to their babies in the operating room. She is passionate about safety and has been active on the Peer Review Committee and the Patient Safety Committee throughout her career.  Dr. Bowers is affiliated with Reston Hospital Center and Stone Springs Hospital Center.

Dr. Bowers is a fellow in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She and her husband of 25 years, a fellow Hoya, reside in Dunn Loring, Virginia with their two college-aged daughters, a yellow lab and two chatty Siamese cats.  An avid and life-long equestrian, she enjoys riding and horse-showing with her girls.  She plans to retire as a master gardener and thoroughly enjoys perennial gardening and landscape design.
